                                शताब्दी में चर्चा में थे। इनका जन्म गोनारद्य 
                                (गोनिया) में हुआ था लेकिन कहते हैं कि ये काशी 
                                में नागकूप में बस गए थे। यह भी माना जाता है कि 
                                वे व्याकरणाचार्य पाणिनी के शिष्य थे। पतंजलि को 
                                शेषनाग का अवतार भी माना जाता है।</span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;"></span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;">भारतीय 
                                दर्शन साहित्य में पातंजलि के लिखे हुए 3 प्रमुख 
                                ग्रन्थ मिलते है- योगसूत्र, अष्टाध्यायी पर भाष्य 
                                और आयुर्वेद पर ग्रन्थ। विद्वानों में इन ग्रथों 
                                के लेखक को लेकर मतभेद हैं कुछ मानते हैं कि तीनों 
                                ग्रन्थ एक ही व्यक्ति ने लिखे, अन्य की धारणा है 
                                कि ये विभिन्न व्यक्तियों की कृतियाँ 
                                हैं।</span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;"></span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;">पतंजलि 
                                ने पाणिनी के अष्टाध्यायी पर अपनी टीका लिखी जिसे 
                                महाभाष्य कहा जाता है। इनका काल लगभग 200 ईपू माना 
                                जाता है। पतंजलि ने इस ग्रंथ की रचना कर पाणिनी के 
                                व्याकरण की प्रामाणिकता पर अंतिम मोहर लगा दी थी। 
                                महाभाष्य व्याकरण का ग्रंथ होने के साथ-साथ 
                                तत्कालीन समाज का विश्वकोश भी है।</span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;"></span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;">पतंजलि 
                                एक महान चकित्सक थे और इन्हें ही कुछ विद्वान 'चरक 
                                संहिता' का प्रणेता भी मानते हैं। पतंजलि रसायन 
                                विद्या के विशिष्ट आचार्य थे- अभ्रक, विंदास, 
                                धातुयोग और लौहशास्त्र इनकी देन है। पतंजलि संभवत: 
                                पुष्यमित्र शुंग (195-142 ईपू) के शासनकाल में थे। 
                                राजा भोज ने इन्हें तन के साथ मन का भी चिकित्सक 
                                कहा है।</span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;"></span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;">द्रविड़ 
                                देश के सुकवि रामचन्द्र दीक्षित ने अपने 'पतंजलि 
                                चरित' नामक काव्य ग्रंथ में उनके चरित्र के संबंध 
                                में कुछ नए तथ्यों की संभावनाओं को व्यक्त किया 
                                है। उनके अनुसार शंकराचार्य के दादागुरु आचार्य 
                                गौड़पाद पतंजलि के शिष्य थे किंतु तथ्यों से यह बात 
                                पुष्ट नहीं होती है।</span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;"></span><br /><span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt;">दरअसल 
                                पतंजलि के योग का महत्व इसलिए अधिक है, क्योंकि 
                                सर्वप्रथम उन्होंने ही योग विद्या को सुव्यवस्थित 
                                रूप दिया। पतंजलि के आष्टांग योग में धर्म और 
                                दर्शन की समस्त विद्या का समावेश तो हो ही जाता है 
                                साथ ही शरीर और मन के विज्ञान को पतंजलि ने योग 
                                सूत्र में अच्छे से व्यक्त किया
